Pikes Peak Cog Railway near the summit

Trip blueprint

Ride the Pikes Peak Cog Railway

The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway starts in Manitou Springs and climbs to the 14,115-foot Pikes Peak summit. A morning departure requires advance tickets, depot parking, warm layers, and preparation for high altitude.

The right frame

A summit trip with a small-town departure

A Manitou Springs stay puts the depot near the town’s old hotels, coffee shops, restaurants, Victorian storefronts, and public mineral springs. After the return train, Manitou Avenue offers dinner and short walks without another highway trip.

The railway avoids mountain driving, but the summit remains exposed to wind, cold, changing weather, and thin air. Walk slowly above 14,000 feet and follow current operator instructions.

Summit effort

Compare the rail trip, summit stop, and drive-up alternative.

A reserved seat simplifies the ascent, but the summit still reaches 14,115 feet. Compare the railway and highway by total time, altitude, weather exposure, and the driver's comfort on a mountain road.

Moderate altitude day

Cog Railway round trip

Distance
About 9 miles each way by rail from Manitou Springs to the summit
Time
About 3 hours total including roughly 40 minutes on the summit
Effort
Reserved departure, depot arrival, sitting time, thin air, wind, and a high-elevation summit stop

The train removes the mountain driving. The summit still requires layers, water, and slower movement.

Easy walking, hard altitude

Summit visitor-center window

Distance
Short walks around the summit complex and viewpoints
Time
About 30–45 minutes depending on schedule and weather
Effort
14,000-foot altitude, stairs, wind, cold, and crowded photo spots

Summit time is brief enough that photos, donuts, bathrooms, and views need a simple order before everyone scatters.

Strenuous drive

Drive-up Pikes Peak alternative

Distance
About 19 miles on the Pikes Peak Highway from the gateway to the summit
Time
Allow several hours for the 19-mile road, pullouts, summit, and brake checks
Effort
High-altitude mountain driving, exposure, changing weather, and driver focus

From May 22 through September 30, driving beyond Mile 7 requires the city’s timed-entry permit in addition to admission. Call the official road-status line before leaving.

Easy

Manitou return walk

Distance
Short walks along Manitou Avenue and mineral-spring stops after the descent
Time
1–2 flexible hours before dinner
Effort
Low mileage, with altitude fatigue, parking, and an easy town walk after the descent

After the summit, Manitou Avenue offers short walks, mineral-spring stops, coffee, and dinner close to the depot.

Four details to settle before boarding

Book the train first

The Cog is not a casual walk-up plan in peak season. Choose the departure first, then plan breakfast, parking, and dinner around that reserved time.

Dress for two towns

Manitou can feel mild while the summit is windy, exposed, and cold. Carry a warm outer layer even when the depot forecast looks mild.

Forty minutes at the summit

Choose views, photos, the visitor center, and food in a simple order. Moving quickly above 14,000 feet can feel very different from walking in Manitou.

After the train

Skip a large second hike. Walk Manitou Avenue, taste one of the public springs, or take an early dinner after returning to the depot.

Departure logic

Choose the train time by the evening you want

Morning departure

Good for clear light and a calmer return. Eat first, arrive early, and keep the afternoon light.

Midday departure

Better if the group needs a slower start. Watch parking time and do not stack Garden of the Gods too tightly after it.

Weather day

Clouds and wind can obscure summit views or affect operations. Check railway notices before leaving the hotel.

Before you board

  • Buy tickets from the official railway site and verify the current schedule before building the day.
  • Give parking and depot arrival more time than a normal attraction.
  • Carry water, sunglasses, and a warm layer even when Manitou feels comfortable.
  • Eat breakfast before departure and carry water for the summit stop.

After the descent

Return to Manitou Avenue for a spring stop, coffee, or an early dinner. Save the larger Colorado Springs attractions for another day unless the group still has energy after the summit.

Cog decision cue

Build the day around the train time and the summit weather.

Tickets, depot arrival, warm layers, water, and a slow return to Manitou matter as much as the view from the top of Pikes Peak.
